School-Wide Environmental Behavior Changes
Reduction of Paper Use- almost all the school staff and our PTA now use electronic newsletters to reduce the use of paper. Newsletters are delivered via emails and the BCPS One system. Paper copies are only sent home to the students who families may not have access to the digital format.

Many teachers at Hillcrest now use Twitter and Facebook to keep in contact with families instead of sending paper newsletters, announcements, etc. Our courtyard even has its own Twitter page!
Task Lighting - About a third of classrooms and work spaces have been equipped with motion sensor lights and task lighting. This allows teachers to utilize a small desk lamp instead of the many large ceiling lights when they are alone and working at their desks and/or work tables or reading a story to their class. When sun light is available. teachers will turn off overhead lights and utilize natural light if it meets the needs of the students.
Environmentally friendly cleaning products are used throughout the school by teachers, cafeteria staff and facilities team. Some of these products have been made by our students. In December 2016, the Environmental Action Team/Club made cleaners that they then distributed to the faculty and staff for use within the school.
