Systemic Partnerships
BCPS Office of Science - Eric Cromwell, Elementary Coordinator and Dawn Dawson, Outdoor Education Office (Teacher/Naturalist) have played a vital role helping us establish our Courtyard and incorporate it into our curriculum.
Custodial Staff and Hillcrest students, staff and PTAMr .Vance Scovens, Hillcrest's chief custodian, works with the Environmental Committee to perform twice annual Tools for Schools checks throughout the building to determine areas that need to be addressed and how to best improve the school's ecological footprint . After these walk-throughs, The Environmental Committee and custodial staff meets to discuss plans for recycling, environmentally conscious cleaning and energy consumption. Through these meetings, Hillcrest developed a program in 2016 in which all students cleaned out their lockers and left chairs down each Friday so the custodial staff could easily clean with the environmentally friendly cleaners made by the PTA Environmental Committee. Mr. Vance and his crew are also instrumental in assisting the students in conducting our "Waste-less Wednesdays".
BCPS/Hillcrest Cafeteria StaffThe cafeteria staff, trained in Safe Serv, continuously supports Hillcrest by safely cleaning and preparing the crops from our edible courtyard for consumption by our students and staff. With out this partnership, students would not be allowed to eat the produce they have grown.
BCPS FacilitiesBaltimore County Public Schools Facilities Office installed new energy efficient lights both in and outside the Hillcrest building in the winter of 2018. They are responsible for approving the SPR forms for all the projects we have requested for our outdoor learning space, tree planting and for laying the mulch found on our playground, walkways in the courtyard and in other areas that were formerly dirt. They are also responsible for the installation of the bike racks that were installed in the Fall of 2017.
