Top 5 Accomplishments
#1. Courtyard Garden - Hillcrest's courtyard is now considered a Tier V (top status) garden by the BCPS Office of Outdoor Science and is used as an example of what is possible in schools around the county.
#2. Fish Release Program - For 16 consecutive years, students, teachers, parents and community partners have provided our 1st and 3rd grade students a Meaningful Watershed Experience on the Patapsco River that includes macroinvertebrate, insect and water quality studies as well as investigations of human impact.
#3. 100 % classroom participation in vegetable garden - For the last 4 years, Hillcrest teachers and volunteers have ensured all Hillcrest students have ownership in the school garden, successfully giving each class the opportunity to participate in the planting, harvesting and maintenance of our organic vegetable and herb beds.
#4. 21st Century Enrichment Grant Recipient - Harvesting a Healthy Hillcrest - In 2016 Hillcrest was awarded $3000 from the Education Foundation and HotSpots Extend Day Program to create a Farm to Table Education Program and in 2017 they awarded us a 2nd grant to focus on Energy and Environmental Literacy.
#5. Community Partnerships - Continuing to broaden the reach of our environmental endeavors, we have developed partnerships with Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, local businesses, watershed organizations, local churches, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and cooperative community gardens.
